The Greater Victoria guide

Greater Victoria wraps the Island's southern tip: the provincial capital and its constellation of municipalities, from Sooke's surf-washed western edge to Sidney's seaside main street on the Saanich Peninsula. Roughly 400,000 people — nearly half the Island — live here, which makes it the region where big-city amenities and small-town rhythms genuinely coexist. It's also the mildest corner of Canada, where daffodils bloom in February and the annual flower count is a competitive sport.

Landmarks & attractions

The Inner Harbour is the postcard: the ivy-and-stone Fairmont Empress, the Parliament Buildings outlined in lights, float planes and harbour ferries weaving between kayaks. A few blocks away, the Royal BC Museum anchors the province's story, and Canada's oldest Chinatown hides the famously narrow Fan Tan Alley. Beacon Hill Park rolls down to the Dallas Road waterfront, where the Olympic Mountains fill the horizon on clear days. North on the peninsula, the Butchart Gardens — a century-old quarry turned world-famous garden — draws visitors year-round, while Craigdarroch Castle and Government House speak to the city's Victorian bones. Out west, East Sooke Park and the Sooke Potholes trade manicured lawns for rugged coast and swimming holes.

Towns & communities

Victoria proper holds downtown, but each neighbouring municipality keeps its own character: Oak Bay's village shops and shoreline, Esquimalt's naval history, Saanich's lakes and farmland, and the fast-growing Westshore — Langford, Colwood, View Royal — where much of the region's new housing rises. Sidney-by-the-Sea is a book town with a waterfront walkway; Sooke is the gateway to the wild coast and the start of the Juan de Fuca trail country.

Getting here & getting around

Ferries from the mainland arrive at Swartz Bay, half an hour north of downtown; Victoria International Airport sits nearby, and seasonal ferries connect to Washington State. The Galloping Goose and Lochside trails let cyclists cross much of the region without touching a highway, and transit is the Island's most complete.

Living here

Greater Victoria offers the Island's deepest job market — government, the naval base, tech, tourism and education — alongside its highest housing costs, which is why many newcomers weigh the Westshore or peninsula communities. What you get in trade: festivals and live music year-round, ocean or forest within twenty minutes of anywhere, and winters mild enough to golf. The businesses below are the region's verified locals — the cafés, trades, shops and services that keep the capital running.
