About Saanichton
Saanichton is the main village of the District of Central Saanich, set among the farmland of the middle Saanich Peninsula. It is the kind of place where tractors still share the roads with commuters, where farm stands sell what was picked that morning, and where the district’s municipal hall, shops and services sit close together in a small village centre within Greater Victoria.
The Saanich Fair
Saanichton is home to the Saanich Fair, one of the oldest agricultural fairs in Western Canada, held every Labour Day weekend at the fairgrounds just outside the village. Livestock shows, horse events, prize-winning vegetables and baking, midway rides and plenty of food make it the peninsula’s biggest annual gathering and a favourite end-of-summer tradition for families across the region.
Farm country
Central Saanich has some of the most productive farmland on Vancouver Island, and the roads around Saanichton are lined with farms growing berries, vegetables, flowers and more. Seasonal farm stands, u-pick fields and pumpkin patches make for an easy afternoon drive, especially from late spring through the autumn harvest.
Island View Beach
East of the village, Island View Beach Regional Park offers a long, open stretch of shoreline with views across Haro Strait to the Gulf and San Juan Islands and Mount Baker on clear days. It is a great spot for beachcombing, birdwatching and picnics, and a campground operates there in summer. The Tsawout First Nation’s community lies along the nearby shore of Saanichton Bay.
Getting here
