About Metchosin

Metchosin is the rural corner of Greater Victoria. Tucked between Colwood and the Sooke Basin, it is a district of small farms, forest, horse pastures and quiet beaches, where residents have chosen to keep things green and unhurried even as the neighbouring West Shore has grown quickly around them.

A rural community by choice

Metchosin has long worked to protect its rural character, and you notice it as soon as you arrive: narrow country roads, farm gates selling eggs and produce, hobby farms and artists’ studios tucked among the trees. The small village centre around the municipal hall, the old schoolhouse and the community hall is the social heart of the district, and community events there draw a loyal local crowd.

Beaches and parks

Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park is the local favourite: a forest trail passes a waterfall on its way down to a sandy beach and a lagoon that is full of birdlife. Other quiet beaches and coves dot the shoreline, and on clear days the views stretch across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains. Trails through regional parkland and along the rural roads make the area popular with hikers, cyclists and riders on horseback.

Pearson College

Metchosin is also home to Pearson College UWC, an international school whose students come from dozens of countries to live and study on its waterfront campus on Pedder Bay — a distinctly global presence in a very rural place.

Getting here

Metchosin is about thirty minutes from downtown Victoria, past Langford and Colwood. Its roads also make a scenic back way toward Sooke and the west coast.
