About Coombs

Coombs is a small rural community a few minutes inland from Parksville, famous across the Island and beyond for a market with goats grazing on its sod roof. Behind that well-known stop is a quiet farming area of fields, forest and small acreages in the Parksville–Qualicum region.

Goats on the roof

The Old Country Market has become one of Vancouver Island’s most recognisable roadside attractions, thanks to the goats that live on its grassy roof every summer. Inside and around it, a cluster of shops, food stalls and import stores make Coombs a busy stop for travellers heading west on Highway 4A toward the Pacific Rim.

Fairs and music

Coombs has deep agricultural roots, and its fairgrounds host a long-running fall fair with livestock, produce and crafts. The community is also known for its summer bluegrass festival, which has drawn musicians and fans to the fairgrounds for many years. Butterfly World, nearby, lets visitors walk among tropical butterflies and gardens.

Rural life

Beyond the market, Coombs and neighbouring Errington are made up of farms, hobby acreages and forest. Roadside stands, nurseries and small producers dot the back roads, and the Englishman and Little Qualicum rivers and their parks are close at hand for swimming and hiking.

Getting here

Coombs sits on Highway 4A, about ten minutes west of Parksville and on the route toward Port Alberni, Tofino and Ucluelet. Qualicum Beach is a short drive north.
