About Tofino
Tofino sits at the very end of Highway 4, on a narrow peninsula between the open Pacific and the sheltered waters of Clayoquot Sound. Once a small fishing village, it has become one of Canada’s best-known coastal destinations, famous for its surf beaches, old-growth rainforest and winter storms, and it anchors the north end of the Pacific Rim. It lies in the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation.
Surf and sand
Chesterman Beach, Cox Bay and the long beaches of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve just south of town draw surfers all year, thanks to wetsuits and consistent swell. Surf schools make it easy for beginners to give it a try, and the wide sand is just as good for long walks, beachcombing and sunsets.
Clayoquot Sound
Clayoquot Sound, recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, surrounds Tofino with islands, inlets and ancient forest. Boat and floatplane tours head out to watch whales and bears, and to reach Hot Springs Cove, where natural hot pools spill down to the sea. Kayakers explore the sheltered channels close to town.
Storm season
From roughly November to February, big Pacific storms roll in, and watching the waves crash against the rocks from a cosy window has become a destination in its own right. Spring brings the Pacific Rim Whale Festival, celebrating the grey whales migrating along the coast.
Getting here
Tofino is about three hours from Nanaimo by road, via Port Alberni and the winding mountain section of Highway 4; Ucluelet is about thirty-five minutes south. Seasonal flights also serve the local airport. Book summer accommodation well ahead.
