The Parksville–Qualicum guide

Parksville and Qualicum Beach share the warmest, calmest stretch of shoreline on Canada's west coast — kilometres of sand where the tide retreats so far the flats heat the incoming water, making these the Island's favourite swimming beaches. The region behind them, Oceanside, folds in Coombs, Errington, Nanoose Bay and Bowser: farm stands, forest waterfalls and one very famous roof.

Landmarks & attractions

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is the anchor — at low tide the sand seems to run halfway to the mainland. Every summer Parksville Community Park hosts an international sand-sculpting competition whose giant works stand on display for weeks. In Coombs, the Old Country Market's grass roof comes with resident goats, a tradition since the 1970s. The waterfall parks are the region's quiet superpower: Englishman River Falls and Little Qualicum Falls both tumble through mossy canyons minutes from the highway, and the Horne Lake Caves offer guided trips into the Island's underground. Milner Gardens & Woodland in Qualicum Beach layers a heritage garden over old-growth forest with a tearoom view of the strait, and each spring thousands of brant geese pause on the flats — celebrated by a festival in their honour.

Towns & communities

Parksville is the bustling beach town; Qualicum Beach keeps a village main street of galleries and cafés a few minutes north. Nanoose Bay wraps a peninsula of coves and arbutus; Coombs and Errington are the rural, market-and-farm heart; Bowser and Deep Bay stretch quiet toward the Comox border.

Getting here & getting around

The region sits on Highway 19 about 25 minutes north of Nanaimo's ferries, where Highway 4 branches west toward Port Alberni and the Pacific Rim — Cathedral Grove's ancient firs are just up that road.

Living here

Oceanside has long been a retirement favourite — mild, flat and friendly — but young families are following the same logic. The pace is beach-town slow, with Nanaimo's services half an hour away. The verified local businesses below keep it running, from beachfront dining to the trades that build along the shore.
