The Pacific Rim guide
The Pacific Rim is where Vancouver Island meets the open ocean: Tofino and Ucluelet at the end of the road, Port Alberni as the working gateway at the head of its long inlet. This is the Island of surf breaks and storm watching, of ancient rainforest boardwalks and beaches that run for kilometres under weather that arrives straight from Japan.
Landmarks & attractions
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve holds the marquee names: Long Beach's endless sand, the Rainforest Trail's boardwalks through old growth, and the surf schools of Cox Bay, where Canada's surf culture was born. Ucluelet answers with the Wild Pacific Trail, a clifftop loop past the Amphitrite Point lighthouse, and a small aquarium that catches and releases its residents each season. Boats and floatplanes run from Tofino to Hot Springs Cove's natural geothermal pools, and to Meares Island's ancient cedars. From Port Alberni, the packet freighter MV Frances Barkley still carries passengers and cargo down the inlet to Bamfield, and the Alberni Valley is the jumping-off point for Della Falls — often cited among Canada's highest waterfalls — deep in Strathcona Park. On the drive in, Highway 4 threads Cathedral Grove's 800-year-old firs and skirts Sproat and Kennedy lakes.
Towns & communities
Tofino is the famous one — fishing village turned cold-water surf capital; Ucluelet ("Ukee") is its quieter, saltier sibling twenty minutes south. Port Alberni, the mill town reinventing itself, holds the region's practical services, and the Tseshaht, Hupačasath, Tla-o-qui-aht and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Nations are central to the coast's past and present.
Getting here & getting around
One road serves it all: Highway 4 from Parksville, roughly two winding hours to the outer coast — check conditions in winter. Book summer beds early; the coast fills fast, and storm-season (November–February) has become a destination of its own.
Living here
Life out here trades convenience for the front row of the Pacific. Tourism, fishing and forestry drive the economy, and the verified local businesses below — surf shops to trades — are the people who keep the end of the road running.
