About
Ahtsik Native Art Gallery sits off Highway 4 on Tseshaht traditional territory in the Alberni Valley, founded in 2008 by Nuu-chah-nulth artist Gordon Dick. The property brings together a working studio, a carving shed and a gallery space where visitors can see traditional Northwest Coast art being made and displayed. Dick is known for red cedar carvings, masks and sculptures, along with hand-crafted jewellery, and collectors describe commissioning larger pieces such as carved doors and masks as a personal, unhurried process shaped by ongoing conversation with the artist. His approach centres on striking a balance between influencing the material and letting the material influence him, drawing on cultural knowledge and oral history passed down through generations. The gallery welcomes guests by appointment or by chance, and the outdoor sculptures alone have been known to stop passing travellers. For anyone interested in authentic Indigenous carving from Vancouver Island's west coast, it offers a rare chance to meet the maker in his own space.
