About Port Hardy
Port Hardy is the largest town on northern Vancouver Island and the end of the highway, about five hours north of Nanaimo. Set on Hardy Bay, it is the service centre for the North Island and a jumping-off point for some of the wildest coast and backcountry in the province. The Kwakiutl, Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw and Quatsino peoples have deep roots in the area.
Gateway to the Inside Passage
BC Ferries’ terminal at Bear Cove, just across the bay, is the departure point for the long Inside Passage sailing to Prince Rupert, one of the most scenic ferry trips on the coast. Many travellers spend a night or two in Port Hardy before or after the crossing.
Cape Scott and the far north
West of town, gravel roads lead to Cape Scott Provincial Park, with its white-sand beaches, rainforest trails and the multi-day North Coast Trail. San Josef Bay, reached by an easy forest walk, is famous for its sea stacks and wide beach. Wildlife viewing, fishing charters and kayaking are all popular, and bears, eagles and whales are regular sightings.
Around town
A seawall walk follows the waterfront downtown, and the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre offers a close look at the life cycle of the local salmon. Port Hardy has grocery stores, restaurants, accommodation and services for the surrounding communities, and local festivals brighten the summer months.
Getting here
Highway 19 ends at Port Hardy, about two and a half hours north of Campbell River. Port McNeill is forty minutes south, and the town also has an airport with flights to Vancouver.
