About Lantzville
Lantzville is a small seaside community just north of Nanaimo, with a village feel that its residents work hard to keep. Incorporated as a district in 2003, it stretches along the shore of the Strait of Georgia and up into forested foothills, and offers a quieter alternative to city life while staying close to everything in the Nanaimo region.
A former coal town
Like much of the mid-Island, Lantzville began as a coal-mining community in the early twentieth century, and it takes its name from Fraser Harry Lantz, an American investor in the local mine. The mine is long closed, but older homes and local stories still recall those days, and the village has grown into a residential community of families, retirees and people working from home.
Beaches and trails
Lantzville’s shoreline is the main attraction: at low tide the beach stretches far out, revealing sand, tide pools and sweeping views to the islands and the mainland mountains. Public beach accesses are scattered along the waterfront roads. Inland, the Lantzville foothills have a network of forest trails popular with walkers, runners and mountain bikers.
The village
The small village core along Lantzville Road has a handful of shops, a café, a pub and community spaces, and local events bring neighbours together through the year. Many residents commute into Nanaimo, but there is a growing number of local businesses and home-based trades serving the community.
