About Cowichan Bay
Cowichan Bay is a small seaside village where much of the main street stands on pilings over the water. Houseboats, fishing boats and float homes crowd the docks, and the smell of fresh bread and smoked fish drifts along the boardwalks. It sits on the bay of the same name, a short drive southeast of Duncan, and it is one of the most photographed corners of the Cowichan Valley.
A village built around food
In 2009 Cowichan Bay became the first community in North America to join Cittaslow, the international “slow town” movement that champions local food, local makers and an unhurried pace of life. That spirit is easy to taste: within a few steps of each other you’ll find bakers, cheesemakers, seafood sellers and cafés using produce from the farms just inland. Many visitors simply wander the village, eat their way along the waterfront and sit on a dock to watch the boats.
The estuary
Where the Cowichan and Koksilah rivers meet the sea, the Cowichan Estuary spreads out in tidal flats and marsh just north of the village. It is one of the most important estuaries on the Island for birds and salmon, and a nature centre and walking trails let you explore it with binoculars in hand — herons, eagles and migrating waterfowl are common sightings.
Boats and the sea
The Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre celebrates the area’s wooden-boat and fishing heritage with exhibits set along a long pier over the water. Kayak tours and boat charters head out onto the bay in summer, and the protected waters make it a gentle place for beginner paddlers.
Getting here
The village is about ten minutes from Duncan and a few minutes off Highway 1 via Cowichan Bay Road, which winds past farms and vineyards on the way in. Parking along the narrow main street fills quickly on summer weekends, so come early or walk in from the lots at either end.
The village’s bakers, boat charters, galleries and other local businesses are listed below, along with any upcoming events nearby.
