About Cobble Hill
Cobble Hill is farm country. A rural community in the south of the Cowichan Valley, it is a patchwork of hay fields, orchards, vineyards and small acreages, with a tiny village centre clustered around its community hall. If you picture the Cowichan Valley as the Island’s food-and-wine country, Cobble Hill is a big part of what you are picturing.
Cider, wine and farm gates
The back roads around Cobble Hill are lined with tasting rooms and farm stands. The area is known in particular for its cideries and wineries, where you can sample what is grown a few rows from the door, and for roadside stands selling eggs, berries, vegetables and flowers on the honour system. A slow afternoon loop along the country roads — with a stop or two for a tasting and a picnic — is the classic way to spend time here.
The Cobble Hill Fair
Every summer the community hosts the Cobble Hill Fair, one of the longest-running agricultural fairs on Vancouver Island. It has the things a country fair should have — livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, prize vegetables and baking, a parade and plenty of food — and it brings the whole south valley out for the weekend.
Outdoors
Cobble Hill Mountain rises behind the village, and its regional park has a network of forest trails leading to lookouts over the valley, the farmland below and Saanich Inlet. Shawnigan Lake, a popular swimming and boating lake, is just to the west, and the beaches and ferry at Mill Bay are a few minutes to the east.
Getting here
Cobble Hill sits just west of Highway 1, about forty minutes north of Victoria and fifteen minutes south of Duncan. Cowichan Bay is a short drive along the country roads.
