About Salt Spring Island
Salt Spring Island is the largest and busiest of the Southern Gulf Islands, lying between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Its rolling farmland, forested mountains and many artists, growers and makers have earned it a reputation as one of BC’s most creative communities, and it has a full range of everyday services alongside its rural charm.
Ganges and the Saturday Market
Ganges, the island’s main village, wraps around a busy harbour with shops, galleries, restaurants and services. From spring to fall, the Salt Spring Saturday Market fills Centennial Park with farmers, bakers, potters, woodworkers and other local makers — everything sold must be made or grown on the island — and it is one of the most popular markets in the province.
Farms, cheese and studios
Agriculture has deep roots on Salt Spring, which is known for its lamb, apples, cheese and many small farms. Farm stands line the back roads, and a self-guided studio tour lets visitors meet painters, potters, glassblowers and other artists in their workshops.
Parks and views
Mount Maxwell offers one of the finest views in the Gulf Islands, over the Fulford Valley and the islands beyond. Ruckle Provincial Park, at the southeast end, combines a heritage farm that is still worked with seaside camping and shoreline trails. Lakes such as St. Mary and Cusheon are popular for summer swimming and paddling.
Getting here
Salt Spring has three BC Ferries terminals: Fulford Harbour, linked to Swartz Bay near Victoria; Vesuvius Bay, linked to Crofton in the Cowichan Valley; and Long Harbour, served by sailings to and from the mainland. Floatplanes also land in Ganges Harbour.
Salt Spring’s verified farms, studios, shops and trades are listed next, along with Gulf Islands events.
