About
Culture Shock is a 100% Indigenous women-owned and operated cafe and gallery on Front Street in Alert Bay, rooted in the rich traditions of the 'Namgis people of the west coast. The shop pairs a welcoming coffee counter, locally regarded as some of the best coffee in the Bay, with a carefully curated gallery of West Coast Indigenous work. Shelves and cases hold handmade jewellery such as copper shield earrings and salmon pendants, along with clothing, accessories, home decor, beads and buttons, and a selection of books, music and film. Everything reflects the artistry and culture of the community, and the shop proudly supports local makers. Culture Shock keeps seasonal hours, opening Tuesday through Sunday and extending its summer schedule from July into late August, and ships its goods across Canada for those who cannot visit in person. Stop in for a coffee, a browse and a genuinely warm island welcome on Cormorant Island.
