About this event

Each winter the world-famous Butchart Gardens near Victoria transforms into one of Vancouver Island's signature holiday experiences. From the start of December through early January, the historic 55-acre gardens in Brentwood Bay glow after dark with thousands upon thousands of lights, turning the paths, ponds and towering trees into an immersive nighttime wonderland. It is a tradition that draws Islanders and visitors back year after year.

The centrepiece is the beloved Twelve Days of Christmas — twelve elaborate illuminated displays bringing the carol to life along the route, from a partridge in a pear tree to twelve drummers drumming. Beyond the lights, the experience is full of festive touches: live carollers and musicians, an outdoor ice-skating rink where you can lace up beneath the stars, warm food and drink, and the gardens' famous plantings dressed for the season. Bundle up, take your time, and let the whole family wander at an easy pace — this is a stroll-and-savour evening rather than a rush. Just twenty minutes from downtown Victoria on the Saanich Peninsula, it pairs naturally with a Vancouver Island holiday getaway or a Peninsula wine-and-dine weekend. Timed tickets are recommended in the busy weeks around Christmas, and evenings are the magical time to go once the lights come on. It is one of the most reliable, genuinely enchanting things to do on the Island through the darkest, most festive weeks of the year.
