The Community & Non-profits guide

Every Island town runs on volunteers. The hall that hosts the Saturday craft fair, the legion with the Friday meat draw, the food bank that quietly feeds hundreds of families, the society that keeps a trail cleared or a heritage school standing — most of what makes a place feel like home is organized by people who aren't paid to do it. This category gathers those organizations in one spot, so newcomers can find them, longtime residents can rediscover them, and visitors can see the side of the Island the brochures miss.

Who belongs here

Community halls and recreation associations. Royal Canadian Legion branches and fraternal clubs like the Eagles, Elks, Lions, Rotary and Kinsmen. Food banks, community kitchens and thrift stores that fund a cause. Arts councils, theatre societies, choirs and community bands. Historical societies and small museums run by volunteers. Seniors' centres, youth groups, family resource societies, animal shelters, environmental stewardship groups, garden clubs and the many registered charities that work in a single valley or on a single island. If it's a non-profit, a society, a club or a charity with a public face on Vancouver Island, it fits.

Why a directory listing helps a volunteer group

Volunteer organizations have the same problem small businesses do, with less time to solve it: people can't join, donate to, rent from or attend what they can't find. A hall with a bookable kitchen and stage, a club that welcomes new members, a society looking for weekend helpers — all of them depend on word of mouth that rarely reaches the family who moved in last spring. A listing here gives each group a clear page with what it does, where it is, how to get in touch and a link to its own website, and it shows up beside the region pages people already browse when they're getting to know an area.

Halls, events and the calendar

Many groups in this category are also the Island's busiest event hosts. Dances, dinners, fundraisers, markets, plays, swap meets and holiday bazaars fill community calendars from Sooke to Port Hardy, and our events calendar is built for them. Organizers get a free account to post each event, edit it when plans change, post a same-day notice if snow cancels the bingo, and copy a recurring event to next year's date in a couple of clicks. A hall or legion with a full season can manage the whole lot from one sign-in — the organizer page explains how it works.

Ways to get involved

Almost every organization listed here needs more than money. Board members, drivers, cooks, sorters, ushers, coaches and people who can set up chairs at seven in the morning are always welcome. If you're new to a town, volunteering is one of the fastest ways to meet neighbours, and most groups are glad to start someone with a single shift. Their own websites usually list current needs; a phone call or email to the contact on their listing is the simplest first step.

Checking a charity

Registered charities in Canada appear on the Canada Revenue Agency's public list, which shows their registration status and the returns they file each year — useful before you make a sizeable donation or name an organization in a will. BC societies are registered provincially. Smaller clubs and informal groups may not be registered at all, which is perfectly normal for a neighbourhood association or a hobby club; just ask how donations are used if it matters to you.
