 on of Cortes community life. Festivities traditionally include a lively p
 arade\, a cakewalk\, foot races and games for children\, food\, music\, a
 nd plenty of opportunities to visit with neighbours and friends against t
 he beautiful backdrop of the beach and ocean. The relaxed\, welcoming atm
 osphere captures the independent\, close-knit spirit that defines this re
 mote Discovery Islands community. Because Cortes Island lies beyond Quadr
 a Island and requires a couple of ferry rides to reach\, the event has a 
 distinctly local\, off-the-beaten-path character that appeals to those se
 eking an authentic island experience. Families spread out on the grass an
 d beach\, kids take part in the games\, and the whole community comes tog
